Sooooo i was installing a new Hurst short shifter into my tranny today and when i was gonna bolt on the base plate i dropped and bolt into the gearbox and it was lost into oblivion. Yes i ignored the part about covering the shifter hole, i stuck a magnet in There drained and poured the fluid a couple times throigh the top to see if i can make it flush down but it hasnt comeup what are the chances its lodged in the gears and if try to run it whats the worst that can happen olz and thank you its urgent

Personally. I wouldn't rotate anything under power until I knew the foreign object was removed.did you try pulling everything out that will come out the top so you can see/fish better? I would do that and probably drain the oil and fish around in the bottom with a piece of bent wire or a magnet.

You need to pull your transmission now.

Sorry dude.

I was afraid of that local quotes for mobile mechanic are atleast 400, im in LA and when i lived in rural area a guy chanhed my clutch for 100 bucks.... I wud do it myself buuuut all my tools got stolen so yea

If you shop carefully, you could probably buy/borrow the tools for less than $400.

just a thought.

I would spend a day fishing...
not for trout.
with a magnet.

An aluminum case, yes? You need a magnet on a flexible wand, you need to be patient and take your time....And you saw the bolt fall inside so there's no chance of it being a wild goose chase ? Good luck!

M5OD-R1 trans has removable top shifter plate, its how you rebuild it.

Take out carpet and metal floor plate, maybe(probably) seats
Then use cutter to trim out as much as needed of the remaining floor plate to remove top plate, you will see how much, it needs to lift straight up because shift forks are attached to top plate, so give yourself some leeway

You know what i slept on it got into this morning again, and i just shoved the magnet with the grabber in there as far as i cud go i wasnt sure i just ioened clamp and pulled and behold i got the i almost cried, and went ahead and finished the instal this time covering the hole before i dis anything else, just some luck and patience and it was all good, also i went throight the gears(engine off) and i may have pushed it down to the bottom of the tranny. And then i got lucky and got hold of it

You got lucky.

Congratulations! I'll take luck any time it comes my way. It's a great addition to skill and patience.

You got lucky.

When doing the "correct" thing on an old truck may cost a lot and doing the free thing may take all day HOPE and time can be your most valuable tools. I agree with adsm08 - you got lucky but how awesome is that?
