I've got a 1998 ranger 4wd automatic trans that has some loud drive line noise while driving down the road. If I put it in neutral while its going down the road the noise goes away whether I'm on or off the gas.

If I let my foot off the gas the noise isn't there if I touch the gas again ( no matter to the floor or just barley tap it ) it comes back.
It shift great can't even tell its shifting unless looking at the tach.
Sounds like a semi going down the road.
Any ideas?
Thanks
James

First thought would be low fluid, but that depends on the noise, if it's a knocking, whirring, a rattle?
does the pitch of the noise change with road speed or engine speed?

Gets louder with speed it seems like. Hard to describe the sound other than it sounds like I've got some big ass super swampers on it.

Check for u joint play. I know my colorado would kinda act that way in 4x4 and high speeds.
could also be cupping tires.
