I was doing some research and see that the early explorer front shaft is a double cardan and was thinking about picking up two. I'd like to use them on my front driveshaft when I start my build. The question is will this work or is it needed? Ill be running a EB d44 and a 89 ranger 1350 manual tcase. Ill be running 3.5 springs and stock spring buckets also. Would they even adapt to the current driveshaft? Thanks!

yes they are DC, yes they can work, lots of guys have them on other models, some use them as rear shafts, but i can't quite remember which trucks that works for... easiest way to do it, once you have your crap in place and bolted down, measure it up, and see if it is the right length, and if the u-joints are the same.

the u-joints should be able to be cross referenced here:

Thanks for the reply! Ill look at the cross reference you suggested and go from there.

You would have a lot better luck with this idea if you go to the 1354 t-case. The 1350 has as slip yoke at the rear that slides into the case where the Ex double cardan unit is which bolts to the output flange of the 1354.

i would love to use a 1354 but got the tcase for nothing and have not found any around in my area. Im hoping to have one by next summer but for not to get up and running i will be using the 1350. Would it be better to run the joint at the axle end then instead of the slip yolk end?

I think you miss the point I was trying to make.

The double cardan shaft attaches to it's transfer case with straps and bolts, same as the attachment at the axle.

The 1350 does NOT have a provision for this kind of attachment unless your transfer case happens to have come out of an STX high-rider. You can run the shaft facing which ever way you want, but it still won't bolt to the 2 inch splined hole that is the standard front output of your t-case.

Yes I understand both shafts are differnt and I have the slip yolk at the transfer case. What I was rendering to was take the double cardan off the explorer shaft and put it on the ranger shaft and shorten as needed. Just didn't know if that was possible or not. Now a little off subject how much of the slip yolk is suppose to be in the tcase if I need to measure to modify a driveshaft?
