The Scout I saw today looks like it would be more fun to drive than any other SUV I've seen. The back end looked pretty damn weird, with a tailgate but not an opening rear window. It's one of those brands that I never considered when shopping for vehicles because they were gone long before I had a driver's license, and now I expect they are treasured classics far beyond my price range.

I used to have a 2wd scout. His name was fred the thunder pig. AMC 258 strait 6 with a switch rear axle. It would switch from one wheel to the other on icy roads. I think about fred every time I see one very dependable, The 258 had it`s quirks it kept burning up exhaust manifolds and the lifters werent adjustable but it only left me stranded once when the points welded together in a mc`donalds drive thru. The one I miss the most was the 73 bronco, Put a 5.0 EFI and I would put it up against most any jeep out there. The only problem I had with it was the carb sloshing fuel around when stump jumping. I beat the holy s&%t out of it and when I got stuck twice the water was up to the pedals in the cab. Jeeps couldnt pull me out it took a full size chevy 4X I can still hear the suction on it breaking loose from the mud, dried the points and down the road it took about a twelve pack to dry the points out.

Scouts are freakin' tight as hell. I'd rock one any day. IIRC, the Scout and 66-77 Bronco have a lot of common or interchangeable parts. I do prefer the Bronco, but I'd take a Scout!

Dad has great grandpa's '67 1100 IH pickup. 304 with a 4spd and some kind of red... I wonder what they called it.

i've owned a few old scouts. they are very rugged and dependable 4 wheelers for sure. if it has the big 196ci 4 cyl. engine, it will give you lots of torque at relatively low rpms. here is the downside, parts for the early models are getting hard to find and expensive when you do. the upside is they are easily adapted to parts from later model 4x4's of various manufacturers. just my $.02.

My brother had one, Think it was a 72 Scout II and that thing was a death trap the doors would fly open even when locked and shut and the damn wheel came off while driving it and almost rolled over, Lots of things need to be fixed on that thing and parts were/are hard to find. But the restored scouts are nice. Most have rotted away by now IMO and need lots of work if you find one. Oh and it was tits in the summer with the hard top off. So I kinda have mixed feeling about them

Got three international scout II's. I did the body work and painted my dads scout II and it looks pretty sick. My scout is primed and ready for paint but sitting outside cause i dont have the money to do anything to it yet...

They are all pretty neat but definitely getting hard to find parts for. They rusted really fast back in the day too so finding a solid one is hard. Rusted body mounts are very common.

Reminds me, there's a '65 Travelall sitting out in the woods at a friend's house. Should pull it out someday.

yes, they were very prone to rusting out. But those international engines literally lasted forever. Luckily, 2 out of the 3 scouts here at my parents house dont have a single speck of rust on them.

They are great, but a Hodge podge of parts. Luckily, that means it can accept donor stuff easily. They rot fast but who cares? You can get panels for them. It's like the old Landcruisers. They are 4wd history man. I you get the chance, dive on it.
