thats the conclusion im coming to, its possible that the elbow had a crack in it and thats why it broke off so easily, but luckily i was able to repair to a somewhat permanent degree (id be happier if i could get the hose through that grommet, but i dont want to push my luck till its warmer out).
Remember air is the enemy here. You must contain a vacuum between the radiator and the level of coolant inside the container. Without that containment the radiator will suck air as it cools off and the airless system is usless..
Big JIm
so far no leaks and no more surging when its cooling down (i used to be able to hear/ feel the coolant surging back into the overflow bottle after turning it off). i believe i finally have a properly functioning cooling system, it just took a complete overhaul of the engine and cooling system, and me pissed off with a pair of pliers in my hand!
