I just noticed a couple threads about it.............

I'm pretty sure this has been covered in the Tech B4, but just in case anybody missed it.........

So I'm pretty much done with the build so I take the truck up to the hills on a shakedown run yesterday, everything seems good, new suspension works great, flexes well, climbed some small rocks, floats over the trails at twice normal speed, even got it off the ground by accident a couple times, no problem, , all good, WooHoo!! .
Headin home, last half of Dakan Mtn road, Left front hub starts squeekin, OK, Have to look at that.........

Pull it apart today, Outer locknut had backed way off, enuff to turn the serrated washer into a cone, had to cut it off, and ate the inside of my new Warn hub.
Whole thing blew apart when I removed it.........Damn!!

The moral of the story- Torque that sucker like the book says.........

Shoulda stopped on the trail and checked it.......

150 Ft lbs torqued spare Warn now installed..........

live and learn..........

:fie:

Soo Ok its not blowing up but My passengerside front axel nut keeps loosening up and smokeing the bearings.. Im not shure what to do. The truck does sit on 35's and I do offroad but its extremely mild offroading.. I dont hammer on the truck.. I already reaplaced the innner and outer bearings on that side with timkin's. I thought they were good and not junk.. what do I do!! is there something else wrong that I dont know about.. And also 90% of the time.. the front end is unlocked. I have Warn hubs on it..

Last year, mine did that on the drivers side. Look at the outer hub nuts closely for cracks. When they crack, they stretch & are unable to hold the set torque value. This could be happening to yours also.

Look closely at the pics & you'll see the cracks...........

If this the case, you'll need new ones.

Hope this helps some of you all in determining the reason why the nuts keep coming loose. If yours do not appear to be cracked to the naked eye yet, put it under a microscope or use a magnifying glass, any slight stress crack will not let them hold the torque value you set them at. I'm figuring mine did that after the numerous times I service my wheel bearings.

That is a very nice bit of information. This should maybe be added as a little bit of tech in the library.

Yes, Thanks, that is really good to know, I'll check the one that went bad when I get home tonight.
I did replace it, with another used one, I'll check that one too.
Thanks, again!

FYI, Dorman sells these nuts brand new, if you need. They aren't that expensive.

I've never heard of these cracking like that, but it's in EXACTLY the right place to do it. Makes sense.

Do you happen to know the part number from Dorman? Its nice to have a couple of cheap ones sittin around, especially if you have to remove the spindle and the mallet isnt working. :flipoff: The BFH will destroy these and send the spindle to the ground. The Warn Kit is alittle on the expensive side.

Hmmm. With 36" TSL's, 150ft/lbs in nowhere near enough to keep my hubs properly adjusted. I've been torquing mine to 200+ for years with no problems. Wonder if there is just a bad batch of nuts floating around out there?

I dunno? I was thinking mine cracked because I service them 4-6 times each year & at 250# each time, maybe they get a little stressed? My new ones have been off-on 3 times since & show no signs of cracks yet.

Yea, I do the same thing. Can't keep the damn water out of the hubs! So far, mine are doing fine though.
