Do I really need to buy Motocraft Gold coolant?

Recently my truck, which works fine, and heats the cabin nicely, blows cold air within 20 seconds of stopping at a stop-light. Then, I come back to speed, and *poof* warm air.

I'm thinking #1: Low on coolant (which it is) and then proceed from there, as in thermostat, or water pump. Thoughts? I'd rather not pay $27/gal of 50/50 (that's $54 gallon conc) when I can buy ShellZone coolant (50/50) on Amazon for $8. The truck might have a year or three of life left (due to rust).

Your thoughts?

You first should try and find out whats in there. If its been exchanged in its 15 years of life, then it may not be the OE coolant. That said, there are numerous coolants that claim compatibility with any OE coolant, just need to find the right one.
Prestone claims to have "all vehicle" coolant along with the stuff stating to be specifically for any ford newer than 2002. A drain/flush/fill with new is preffered, but topping off with anything compatible should work just fine for the 1-3 years you need the truck to last.

A year or 3? Get the cheap stuff so long it meets specifications.

Zerex G05 concentrate is the same stuff and it's $20/gallon at walmart. Cut it 50/50 with distilled water and you'll be good to go.
