i tore into my rear end today to replace the pinion seal and change the fluid and gasket on it. well i have rtv high temp silcone and a felpro gasket. how should i do this? use both or just one?

Most just use rtv.

I've done it both ways. Its easier and just as effective to use RTV alone. But you can use a gasket too.

If you use only RTV put it on the axle and let it get tacky for about 20 min first before you put the cover on.

I hated dealing with RTV so I bought a Lube Locker RTV-Free gasket. Its pretty slick do a google search.

I just clean the housing and cover with brake-clean to get the oil off, lay a bead of RTV and bolt the cover on. Never had an issue yet....

ok thanks guys. quick question, when replacing the pinion seal, after i remove the retaining bolt do i hammer the flange out?

Give it a couple taps...if it comes free great...if not you'll need a big 2 jaw puller to get it off.

A steering wheel puller with long 5/16 bolts through the flange with nuts on the back works too. I'm too cheap to buy a good 2 jaw puller for everyone else in the shop to constantly want to borrow!
