D35 compared to 44 strength

Thanks shran, one tons do look like the answer huh?

So, the bronco axles were d30??? Must of been late 60's?
Anyway, they're out.
Looked around and right axle (outer and stub) will be around $2-300.
The d60's from the dodge are $500.
Might pull the broke axle and drive in 2wd so mama can run her explorer. (She's getting worse about off roading every second day than me!)

Crap....what to do, what to do...
I could build the whole suspension on the floor and the actual swap will be quicker. I'm thinking build a trailing arm suspension like the rear end but use coil overs off an explorer or something. Driveshaft, brake lines and steering linkage, done.....yeah right! Lol!

Dunno, have to think more about it.
I have that f150 ttb sitting there and would swap it in but it's 3.08 gear, 3.50's are bad enough but 3.08's???

Hmmmmmm.

Just had another thought, will a d35 pig (diff) fit in a d44 housing?
I could put the 150 ttb in the ranger and then either swap the rear diff or swap the rear gears to match.
Put my 3.55's in the d44 housings....

If I was going to do a solid axle swap, I wouldn't swap in anything less than a Dana 60. I see people do Dana 44 swaps and then swap in chromoly shafts to try to make them stronger. If you're going to do it, get as much axle strength as you can.

Apparently I’m getting a ranger axle for it for now....mama found out and hit the roof, lol!

I agree with, “if I’m swapping, go one ton” but I have a ttb f150 frame and am wondering if the 35 diff will fit in the 44 ttb?
If so, that could be the free upgrade (I know nothing is free) until I find cheap one ton housings?

Still looking for the 60’s, but mama was pretty adamant that she wants to go wheeling soonest and me designing/building/ fabricating a complete front suspension and taking weeks to do it is not on. Get back on the trails and try to use less throttle and then down the road build a suspension on the floor and roll the truck in, install and back on the trails.

Mustang sitting there “what about me???”

Sigh...

I guess you could put 44's or 60's under the Mustang, too if it's feeling left out.

Anyone know or has anyone tried to put a ttb 35 in a ttb44 housing?

Somebody must of tried this before?

Why would you expect that to work? Different size ring gear, pinion, bearings..... the list goes on and on......

I think he's saying putting the D35 pig in the D44 housing... the bolt pattern is likely different. I imagine you got the idea from the D44 and D50 being the same bolt pattern to put the bigger pig on the housing with the longer beams...

I'd forgotten how the TTB on my 89 bII went together, looked at an exploded parts drawing and OK.... so I get that now.

But if he's busting D35 parts already, that wouldn't seem to be a very good idea. At least in my mind.

Yeah, sorry I wasn’t clear. I want to put the 35 pig in the 44 housing. I have 3.55’s in the 35 and 3.08’s in the 44. So, if it does fit I’d swap in the longer 44 arms and then put the 3.55 pig in.
All 44 ttb with the 35 pig.

It won't work. The D44 3rd member is different in every way, most importantly, the D35 3rd member will not bolt into a D44 beam or vise versa.

Early Broncos had a D30 front axle up till 73? and then it was a D44 low pinion with drum brakes for a couple years. 76 and 77 had discs, the knuckles on those are the ONLY part of an EB axle worth a crap IMO. They will allow you to mount your tie rod higher than most other D44 knuckles.

I know the urge to use small parts is strong... But I've done it and broke them, it's a waste of time.

Dodge front axles will be of little use to you by the way, the pinion is on the passenger side. You need a Ford driver drop axle.

Ok, thanks shran, of course it would be too easy to bolt together what I got....
As far as the dodges, unless they've changed, dodge and Ford are drivers side and chev was passenger side. Did dodge change? They normally copy Ford quite a bit. Lol.
Got a 2010 ifs dodge in the yard, never made a point of looking at it but any older solid axle dodges I ever saw were drivers side like Ford??

Wouldn't be the first time I remembered wrong! Lol!

Dodge has had front axle pinions on both sides (not at the same time ;) ).

I recall seeing really old ones on the passenger side; seems they've been on the driver side recently, for the most part.

I take that back, they did have driver drop for a few years. My mistake.

Seems to me there was another reason not to use them, front axle disconnect or something like that but I'm not familiar with the details of that.
