So i'm swapping gears on a D35 and I have a carrier that has the factory 3.73s on it and I have a carrier and third member that has 3.27 gears on it. Now just out of curiosity I tried installing the 4.56 on the 3.27 carrier knowing that the break is 3.54 and lower and 3.27 and higher. And I was quite surprised that my back lash and contact pattern was in spec the pinion pre-load was a little higher than used bearing spec but a touch lower than the new bearing spec.
Next question, What is your guys preferred way of crushing the new sleeve? I tried a 20 ton shop press and put a decent amount of force on it and it gave about .02 but i didn't wanna go any further for fear of it going to far in a shot. Tried the impact and the Snap On doesn't have enough muscle I guess. So I clamped the yoke and took after it with a breaker bar and got it to pop.
