Hello all -

I recently acquired a very nice 2000 Ranger Trail Head.

Going into the purchase, I knew the cruise control did not work, and had not worked for a long time. The seller purchased it with the cruise not working, so, they could not provide any insight.

I have reasonable mechanical and electrical skills being an engineer by profession, but I wanted to reach out for advice.

I do not have a factory shop manual yet, and the Haynes manual is "weak at best" for detailed electrical trouble shooting.

I have checked the obvious - rear brake lights, brake light switch, redundant switch at master cylinder, fuses, etc. I also removed the horn bad / air bag to take a look at the switches - nothing obviously wrong.

All seem to be ok.

Two questions:

1) I can not find my OBD2 code reader. (I believe this is a OBD2 vehicle.) If I purchased a new one, would I be able to read trouble codes as a result of the cruise system malfunction?
2) any advice on "next steps" trouble shooting?

Thanks!!

Yes its obd2 but most of your basic obd2 code readers can't read codes related to things like cruise control. The codes are often vehicle/manafacturer specific that need higher end scanners or special software like forscan.
