I am taking a '93 Mustang 2.3 and swapping things from my blown '89 Ranger 2.3 and going to install it. The Crank Pos. Sensor (CPS) wiring on the Mustang 2.3 is corroded so I plan on pulling the CPS from my Ranger engine and install it on the Mustang engine. I've read over the instructions in my Haynes manual and it mentions a "special tool" for the CPS? Of course the yshow no picture of this tool or procedure. Can anyone clear this up for me? I've searched for a post on the topic but found none. Maybe my seach words are not hitting? Anyhow, I'd appreciate any help on the issue.

Thanks,

The tool is for clearance between the pickup and the vanes of the balancer.Just make sure when you set it up,that you have clearance between the vanes and pickup. No forward and back movement, just up and down.Put it on and spin it slowly over making sure none hit

Measure the existing gap(s) with a feeler's gage and match that.

I had a similar issue with mine, bought my ranger with a blown 2.3 and got a junk yard special for $500. well, like most yards, they cut and chopped everything they didnt want to disconnect. So i just rewired it with the wiring from mine rather than taking it all the way out. I'm sure it isn't the smartest way to go about it but it worked for me.

just center it in the vanes, I used a business car folded in half for a gage

Gap

I have the replacement engine on the stand and I'm not sure how you'd fit a feeler gauge or a card between the gap? With the pulley on the nose of the crank it pretty much shrouds the sensor. Anyway, I now have a better understanding on how the sensor fits and functions.

Thanks!

Byrd,
nice avatar! I have a Ford blue colorized version at www.fairlanet.com/images/fordgirl.jpg if you're interested.

it's easier than you think, look at the pulley, notice the 4 bolts with the 10mm heads, pull them off and the pulley part will just fall off, then you see how you are supposed to adjust it... it's super simple, get yourself a 5.5mm socket to loosten the bolts for the sensor.

and I of course meant a business carD earlier, the d sticks on this dang laptop...

get the tool at an auto parts store. you don't want to break that crank sensor. $90 plus $200-300 for an ignition module

its a little plastic thing that clips on and aligns it perfectly then you just tighten it down... i got to learn that on the new crank sensor.. oh and by the way when the first one broke it wasn't rubbing but at 1200rpm it was just barely touching enough to break it
