I have been working on a 87 ranger 2.9 auto 4x4.
It has a crank no start issue. I am not getting injector pulse. Also the fuel pump will not come on with ignition. I can jump relay and make it come on.
So far I have replaced all three relays on passenger fender along the pigtails. Repaired a bunch of wiring. Swapped eec with known good unit. From same build year. Inertia switch has been bypassed previously. Ignition switch has been replaced. Appears to have new distributor and tfi module. I have looked over schematics the past few days and have traced wiring. I can not seem to find the issue. Please help.

Look over near the battery. On that side with all the relays, there is a large bundle of wires that goes by and picks up the relay wiring, and is heading down to the computer in on the passenger side.

Follow this large bundle up past the starter relay, and somewhere along the way there should be a decent sized black wire coming out of the bundle. It should come out of the bundle, go to a little connector, and then head over to the battery negative terminal. If you lose this important ground, it will kill the whole truck. It grounds the computer system wiring. That little connector likes to corrode also.

That connector has been bypassed. And wired direct to battery ground.
Also do you know if the ground that connects to the intake. Has to be connected to the threaded hole on the intake. Right now it is connected to one of the egr bolts. I wouldn't think that would make a difference. But I'm not a 2.9 specialist. Lol.

I agree. That shouldn't make that much difference.

Check for power and ground at all of the necessary pins on the PCM connector?

I believe I have good powers and grounds at ecm.
I'm working on swapping engine harness out now. We'll see how this goes.

That ground on the intake is the important one for the ignition coil and the ignition system. So long as it has a good connection to the engine, it should not matter. You could check it with a meter.

Thread moved to the 2.9 forum.

Was this running with the new distributor? Make sure it is installed correctly if it is misaligned by one gear tooth the engine won't start.

Ok. I believe I have figured the running issue out. Someone had installed a distributor. Before I got it. It was one tooth off.
Now my next problem is I still have no switch power to the fuel pump relay or the eec relay which powers the injectors. I am able to jump those relays and truck will now fire and idle great.
I think I'm just going to run a toggle switch to these relays so that I can drive the truck. Unless someone has a better idea on how to fix it properly. I have been over the entire harness multiple times. I'm sure there is something I'm missing but I can't figure it out.

Do you have a meter? Are you triggering the coils on the relays to activate them or are you bypassing the entire relay? Here's a diagram. It may be simply a bad fusible link depending on what you are jumping. Got to have a meter or a testlight might even be better to troubleshoot.

Yes I have a meter, a power probe, and a test light. I have bypassed the relay and activated the relay by jumping across power to the signal wire. And it will work with way. And intermittently I can get switch power to the eec relay but I can't seem to get switch power to the fuel pump at all. And can't find the issue with the eec relay.

Fuel pump relay is only powered for 2 seconds after EEC relay activates unless the engine is running. Pretty hard to catch it by yourself.

Ignition switch problem? That is where the signal for the EEC relay comes from.
