Hi guys, I have a few questions
First, for engine rebuild, can any of you rec a decent manual other than the Ford shop manuals? something that won't break the bank? I need something that covers all the tolerances, torque, all the details. I'm good with fundamentals, but this engine is completely new to me.

Second, where my exhaust bolts to the "header", the two flange bolts are so far gone and rusted, I'm going to have to saw them off and drill it out/tap it. the bolts are so far gone I'm not going to be able to figure out the bolt size/thread. Does anyone know that already? If not, I think I may just drill them out and go with stainless studs and lock-nut the thing on there instead of trying to drill/tap it.

Lastly, I'm still disassembling this nightmare in the little spare time I have, but something has me confounded... can someone tell me what the heck this thing is? right above the motor mount on the left side of the block. I'm probably going to feel stupid when someone explains it, but I just can't sort out what it might be.

I think the Haynes and Chiltons have tolerances for the engine

Exhaust manifolds are held on by 10mm bolts if I remember right, can check tonight to be sure.

That is the oil pump drive, it's where the distributor would be but that dummy is needed to be driven off the auxiliary shaft to go down to the oil pump.

Ah, Ok. I knew I'd feel like a dummy when someone told me, makes sense now. Is this a wear item to add to my parts list? I haven't been inside the engine yet

The best way to get factory Ford manuals is to regularly check eBay. It's a "luck of the draw" kind of thing; usually there's several of the manual that you're looking, for stupid money, but the same manual will occasionally pop up for cheap. You gotta check ofter, and jump on it as the killer "buy it now" deals don't last long.

I'm not sure about which manuals are available new at parts stores these days. Chilton and Haynes used to be the most prevalent, and both are adequate. And again these aftermarket manuals can be had on eBay reasonably.

I don't do Amazon, or whatever is currently going on for internet purchase, so I can't comment there.

It's good that your serious enough about working on the truck to know the importance of having some kind of reference material. And, there are no stupid questions, and there's no sense in feeling like a dummy. We all started in the same place . . .

I loath ebay, but I bit down on a leather strap and just went ahead and ordered to factory Ford service manuals from ebay. They are beat up, but I got all three for 100 bucks... body/chassis, drivetrain, and electrical/emissions
Im the opposite, I'd rather have the stuff on CDROM, but the books will work just fine. I don't do the online thing either. I insist on owning what I buy

The drive isn't really a wear item on these from what I've heard of, I'm still running the stock '90 unit on now it's 3rd engine?

I'll know more when I get in there and can check it out. But like you said, something like that probably doesn't wear much, especially running in an oil bath. I was just curious and couldn't find anything on it since I didn't know what the heck it was or how to search for it. Sometimes (which means almost all of the time) my curiosity overrides my productivity.
