Heading to the junkyard soon for an ECM (or four) to try on the "SPOUT issue" 1993 2.3 manual.

My understanding is that we'll need a 1993-1994 unit that comes from another 2.3 manual, and the last three digits on the box are the specific programming. 2wd/4wd doesn't matter but EGR does. '94 B-Series would be okay too. Frankly we don't even know if the current unit is the correct one (that could be the issue), so if anyone knows the correct final letters that it should be it would be much appreciated.

Also if any of the above info is incorrect please let me know!

Ford never published those codes, definitions and cross references, as far as I know

Your 1993 should have this part number on PCM
F3TZ-12A650-XXX

F3 = 1993
12A650 is the part number for ANY YEAR and ANY FORD PCM, still used in 2022

The last 2 or 3 digits, XXX, changed in each year and are specific for what PCM was for, but Ford never made that available

The Software Tag on the label, seen here: http://web.archive.org/web/20131229165710/http://oldfuelinjection.com/?p=17
This was also on a white sticker in the cab and maybe in engine bay, this is the software loaded on the PCM on assembly of vehicle, and would be specific to engine size, trans type, EGR, ect......... also not published by Ford

Best bet is to find matching 93/94 Ranger 2.3l and get that PCM, matching trans would be nice but wouldn't matter for your "test"

I assume you have pulled out current PCM and inspected it, especially the 2 or 3 barrel Capacitors, if not do that
Clean up any corrosion seen, replace the capacitors, just on spec, under $5
Clean pins and slots on 60-pin connectors
re-istall and see what you have

Thanks Ron! I pulled the old one and per Google it looks like it's the correct one. F37F-12A650-BC seems very popular for the 2.3 manual.

The only thing that looks like that software tag is B002 which isn't on the chart. It looks like it has a junkyard marking on it, and it's pretty crusty looking. Maybe later I'll peek inside at the capacitors. We have quite a few '94s in the U-Pull so hopefully I'll know soon if this is the issue. Here's a pic:

Yes, B002 is the software

Yes, that is a wrecking yard mark

F37F is 1993
7 is Ranger specific, T was also used for "truck"

Just an update for anyone who might use this as a reference thread. The '94 PCMs didn't fix the problem, but seemed to work fine (as in everything was the same after a swap). Both '94 units had different codes but were the same as each other -- F47F-12A650-ADC, BAB2. If you have a 1994 2.3l 5-speed, that's probably the unit you want!
