Greetings everyone, just joined the forum.

I have a 2000 Ranger XLT 4WD with 4.0 and A/T and 112,300 miles and have been smelling coolant for a couple months.
I have checked radiator, water pump, hoses, thermostat housing and everything looks good.
So today, while I had some extra time I found a leak coming from the front cover on the engine. You can actually see the dampness coming from between the block and the cover on the right side.

What is involved with replacing this gasket? Haynes manual says the engine will have to be removed to replace it. Is there another way or will I have to take it to the shop to have it done.

Any ideas what a Ford dealer would charge to repair it?

Thanks,
Tim

First thing I'd do is tighten the bolts in the area and see if the leak stops. Gasket shrinkage and bolts coming loose is NOT unknown.

Don't go to a Ford dealer for anything but warranty and recall work. If you pay for it, go elsewhere.

I wouldn't think removing the engine is necessary for this; removing the radiator, water pump, all the accessories, and the harmonic balancer ought to do it. But make sure you can get a partial oil pan gasket for it (usually, these are in "timing cover sets") before you take anything apart.

It's worth it to try to tighten the bolts, but be careful not to overdo it. Broken bolts = bad. It may or may not work.

Thanks Guys for your response.

I did what Big Jim M said to do and then cleaned it up around the area and warmed the engine up and drove it for about 15 minutes and didn't see any leaks. I will drive it this week and keep an eye on it for leaks.
I also checked at a friends shop and got a quote of $250.00 to replace it. The shop owner said the engine wouldn't have to be removed as MAKG stated. It would be about 5hours labor.

Good to hear that!
I think I will burn the Haynes manual! LOL!!

Thanks again,
Tim
