hey guys
so the 5 speed in my 2000 ranger with a 3.0 is pretty much toast and i dont wanna shell out the cash for a rebuild. can i take a 2wd manual transmission and have a tranny shop switch the output shaft and tail housing from my 4x4 tranny to make it work in my truck?
thanks

This forum has an excellent search feature built into it and I am certain this has been discussed numerous times. To give you a rough idea, it will require complete disassembly of the transmission in order to swap to a 4x4 mainshaft.

He's already said he's taking it to a shop, so he's not too concerned with the details. Still, search function is good, but I figured as for what he was actually asking I could give him a few words of response.

Yeah but he's also apparently concerned with the cost too since he's comparing it to the cost of just buying another transmission. When it comes down to it there's a bigger cost difference between just "plugging in" another output shaft (which cannot be done on this transmission) and having to replace the whole mainshaft which to a shop labor-wise is pretty comparable to a rebuild. My biggest concern with doing that would be that someone tears it down to swap the mainshaft and finds other problems which may exceed the cost of buying a whole other transmission. I only said to use the search because it's been discussed so many times out there that if somebody with decent mechanical skills and the right tools were to read over it all they'd be able to do the job themselves.
