Connector to 4x4 module broken-dealer says it's obsolete unavailable-help!

I've been having problems with my push-button 4x4 system in my '92 Ranger 4L V6 auto (who doesn't?). After taking the shift motor apart and cleaning it and checking all connectors, the 4x4 system is dead. I went through the diagnostics provided here, but noticed that the 8-wire block connector into the module is brittle and crumbling, to the extent that it's not going to go back in the module.

So I phone several parts stores, all say phone the dealer. I phone the dearler, he says they don't have the connector, only the harness (the 8-wire one between the 4x4 module and shift motor) but then tells me that it's obsolete and discontinued. The only solution he could offer was a dismantlers but warned that any connector of the same vintage would likely also be brittle. I'm wondering if I just got a lazy-ass parts guy on the phone?

Any suggestions would help as until I replace the connector (or hardwire the damn thing) I'm dead in the water.

The module itself and the dash switch tests all checked out. I was going to do the continuity test across the pins of this connector for the various shift modes and it started breaking up more. I wouldn't be at all surprised if all my issues related to this failing connector.

Can I drive my pickup with the 4x4 module disconnected?

Thanks in advance
