Completely Stumped!!! Help Please!

Well, if the tach if going apepoop, it may actually be your MAP sensor or something in the ignition system (or even a loose ground wire)...

Check the firewall just above the heater box near the hood...there should be a plastic box with a few wires and a vac line going into it...that is the MAP sensor and it can cause some wild errotic (erratic) things to happen...like inconsistent revs, motor chuggling, and stalling...you can get them cheap at the junk yard...try swapping that out ...but, again...do NOT buy a new one...they are usually over $100...

But your problem actually sounds similar to something someone else ran into recently...if not the MAP...

BTW...the inertia switch has a button to reset it...you don't have to tap or otherwise bang on it to get it to start working...just reset it...

But you would be better off to just by-pass it by connecting the two wires together so the circuit is complete...just leave yourself enough wire near the switch to reconnect it if you want to put it back later...

Ok...I'll look into the MAP sensor next. Thanks. I did try the reset on the inertia switch and it did nothing...reset works just had no effect on the truck. The truck just died on me twice and hour ago heading onto base. The first time it took it a bit to start back up, second time fired right back up. After that no problems...started up, ran fine, came home.
How about this for a possible problem; if my throttle body (internally) is dirt or the IAC is about to crap out, could that cause these issues? I've also been thinking about the fuel pump or something aft of the engine, but wondering if that would cause such and instant affect on it i.e the bucking and random stalling with the ability to fire right back up...any thoughts on that?

Yeah, that was what my Tempo was doing when the in-tank pump went south...not sure about the dirty throttle body causing this as it would probably be more consistent and prolonged...

The IAC may actually be a problem...that may be what the post I read was about...something about a loose ground wire on one of the bolts that hold it down...the bottom left bolt, apparently, has a ground wire connector and if that is loose it can cause rough running, stalling and no start situations...more the no start at all than intermittent problems though...

Hey, Did you see my latest report? I replaced the pickup coil and it hasnt stalled yet. I will need more time before I declare sucess though. But towards the end it was getting worse. It would stall three times just to move it in the drive. Just trying out now how to readjust base timing properly. Good Luck!

That is so funny you posted that...I was going to post a similar reply tonight! After brainstorming with a friend of mine at work we decided on the pickup coil as well. I realized that it is the only piece of my ignition system that hasn't been touched...and that kind of makes since. So, long story short, I picked one up this evening after work and I'm going to replace it Saturday.
Thanks for your advice and keep your fingers crossed for me....I'll do the same for you!

It wasnt difficult to do at all. The hardest part was taking off the gear on the distributor shaft. Just make sure you have a gear puller. Also make all your marks so you put everything back the way it was. mark the dist body to the engine block. and the dist rotor should be pointing to number one on dist. When you pull the dist up, rotor will move a little. Mark this also and put rotor in this position when you install, and as it goes into engine and meshes with other gear it will move back to the number one position. Take your time and it will work out OK.

****NEW UPDATE********

OK...truck is dying more frequently now and still no solution has been found. Died after work tonight and wouldn't start. Noticed I was getting power TO the coil but timing light was showing no spark AFTER the coil. So, went and got a new coil, changed it and still NO JOY!! My god does this ever stop?? Through stalling and starting headaches I made it back home and that is where it sits. Not sure where to go now. I did bypass the inertia switch, but it made no difference. I guess I will look into seeing if the fuel filter is clogged or maybe even the pump in the tank all though when it runs it runs fine.

Are there any relays I could look at? I noticed there are three over on the passenger side fender and sometimes when it dies I here some clicking going on in that area. Long shot? Possibility?

Any more suggestions people?

Thanks,
Rob

Hey, I'm curious, did you change the ignition coil or the pick-up coil,or both??

completly stumped

i had the same problem with my 97 aerostar it would run unitl something got hot them shut down usually in the middle of traffic. i changed the dist, remote ign module, still did it but got better gas milage,i then changed the ign coil and it solved the problem and i got 400 miles on a tank of gas by the way the oem parts work better than aftermarket, more heavy duty:icon_cheers:

I had a somewhat similar problem and it was my in tank fuel pump going out. It would run fine for about 45 minutes then it would start to hiccup on me. Then after that it would eventually die and id have to wait 15 minutes for it to start again.
