Code 224

CEL on my 94 Ranger is on - I ran codes and got 224. The book that came with the scanner for this code says" Distributorless Ignition System (DIS) Problem-Primary circuit failure in coil 1,2,3,or 4. My Haynes manual says "SPOUT circuit open". Since SPOUT stands for SPark OUTput, that could be related to the coil primary circuit. Ford truck website says "Failure in ignition coil primary circuit - Ignition Systems". Any ideas? Is my DIS module going on the blink again? Thanks. Danny

Saw a you tube video that had an excellent reference breakdown of the function of the ICM (DIS Module in Ford) and its control / interaction with the various componants. Recommendation is when you replace the ICM, you should replace the Coil Pack (s) and visa versa or the replacement can burn out the older componant. I had replaced the ICM a few years back with a used ICM and did not replace the coils. This time I checked the resistance on the coil packs and found it to be high so I replaced the coils, cleared the code but the CEL came back on and so did the 224 code so I replaced the ICM with a new unit from Advance Auto cleared the code and problem solved.
