Clutch kits

Maybe where you are flywheels aren't that expensive. Where I live a USED one will run you about 150. Then you still need to have it skimmed. I'll argue with you all day long that replacing the flywheel isn't any better than spending 15 to 20 bucks to have one resurfaced. Unless of course your ring gear is shot but I don't see that very often either.

Also... and this is the redneck talking... In the old days everyone wanted to use lighter flywheels. Resurfacing knocks a few grams off the overall weight. :icon_twisted: Probably not enough to make a significant difference though. :D

After you've seen one crack, or split around the crank bolt holes, you'd probably change your mind. I get to see lots of transmission, clutch, and torque converter carnage. Just saw a Cummins with almost 300,000 miles toast a flywheel and obviously the clutch/pressure plate.

And yeah, I can get most flywheels for 100 dollars or less. Also for the record, most trans shops use Luk for replacement clutches. I had one in my Explorer and loved it.

Woe lucky. My local shop wanted $1200 to replace my clutch. That's why i did it myself. I didst use a transmission jack for my 4x4 :D

The total bill is going to be $625 including parts but still far cheaper than the $1000 quoted me by the dealer.

I never had any luck with those. So in complete agreement with you if you have a mechanic that is ONLY quoting 375 it might be a benefit to have him do it. But... Don't be surprised if it turns into a bigger bill because of the difficulties that no one plans on.

Yeah im really leaning towards this but im worried about the extras it might cost. The mechanic is pretty good and has done some work for me before but its not his fault that our roads are covered in calcium chloride in winter and kills any bolts.

I didnt use a floor jack either. I built up wood cribbing and a milk crate. Slow but steady. I parked the truck in a 12 X 20 tent and spent 3 1/2 months putting stuff to rights. I didn't need to use the truck , so I fixed a bunch of stuff.

Ya same here. Since it was all taken apart I changed everything in the tranny, changed diff fliud in both axles, got a yellow top optima battery and changed the oil. Did the breaks and bearings about 2,000 miles ago so I should be good for awhile

Be very careful if you should decide to do your clutch yourself. This happened to mine when all I planned on was buying a used transmission. IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU! :taunt:

I have been dangerously close to that point several times this year.

My cab will have to come off at some point soon for that though.

Yah , no fooling. I didnt need to get the truck going in a hurry. So I patched the frame. And broke a brake line in the process. One thing lead to another, and the progression is endless. I stopped before taking the bed off. The truck is just used for lugging stuff as needed. I'm still running on a tank I bought July 5th. Once I broke the rusty bolts loose, putting the Ranger together back together, wasn't too bad. I took it slow. and cleaned the hardware as I went. Last regular clutch job was in a '62 F 250 about 1970 A clutch job isnt rocket science. I dont use air tools . I blocked up the Ranger 2 feet in in the air and had at it.
