Cluster swap questions

Hello all,

I have a 1995 Mazda B2300 base model and I pulled a gauge cluster from a 97 B2300 yesterday at the junk yard and swapped it in. All the gauges work but the tach doesn't ever go above 2500rpm and the odometer rolls very slowly.

I'm just confused...?

Maybe there was a generation change on the B series between those years. Someone with better knowledge will swing through soon.

Sent from my iPad avoiding something that I should be doing right now.

Do a search... but I tend to remember someone else with a 95 or 96 Ranger doing a cluster swap and having similar issues. There was a difference between the two years and that was causing his problems. Also 95 was OBD1 and 96/97 is OBD2.

I know this is going to sound unbelievable but my truck has a build date of 01/95 and it is OBD2.

Does your tach read normal at idle ? If your odometer gears look good and your old odometer worked, you can swap your old odometer into your new cluster. I changed the cluster in my 97 Ranger to a 98 cluster because I liked the green back lighting better than the blue. I swap my old odometer/speedo into my new cluster. I have seen problems with factory tachs. So I just went with a aftermarket tach.

Not unbelievable at all. Ford started using OBDII on '95 model Rangers. I know that on Thunderbirds they started OBDII on '94 models even though the imperial federal government didn't mandate it until '96.

The 96+ tachs read odd in the older trucks for some reason. I swapped the tach from my 95 cluster into the 03 cluster when I did the swap. Also there were a few pin out changes after 96. IIRC it is the Door Ajar light and maybe the CEL? Its in my build thread somewhere...

Also is the donor was V6 and yours is I4 that causes tach issues IIRC.

Sorry for the late response, donor is a 4cyl like my truck. I'll see if I can't snag one from a 1995 so everything matches.

Thanks
