changing timing belt

changing timing belt preventative meaning belt still in contact, i want to know if you have to remove the crankshaft timing sensor to do this job also if i dont move any timing pulley do i just slide the new belt on?

before you remove the belt, rotate the motor until the marks on the pulleys are on the marks, then loosen the tensioner. The rest is pretty straight forward.

Do NOT remove the crankshaft sensor unless you have the tool to set it correctly. All you should have to do is pull the belt past the large retaining washer on the crankshaft.

I'm in the same boat you're in. Napa couldn't find the tool listed in their catalog, so I will post my result if I do mine before yours.

Nope it's a little tricky getting the belt in behind that little sheetmetal ring in front of the gear make sure it doesn't hit the sensor after you have the belt in place. Two other things that you don't have to remove that big 7/8" crank bolt or that big lump of iron behind the serpentine belt pulley. also I used a 1" ratcheting tie down strap around the frame to pull the cam belt tensioner back to install the belt. Truck started up instantly!

if you pull the crank sensor off, do it at the block, no alignment necessary. to line up the crank sensor isn't all that complicated... it's just centering it between the vanes on the crank pulley, fold a business card in half and use that as a spacer on the outer vane, that's about as complicated as it is...

it's easier to get the belt out if you take off the crank pulley so you don't have to work it around the vanes, and to save yourself a headache on reassembly, take some white out and mark the cam pulley and the crank pulley and belt (the other pulley just drives the oil pump), put the new belt on top of the old belt and mark the new belt where the old one was marked then line up the marks again, it'll save you a few minutes

thats odd how you say to do it, i removed the harmonic balancer bolt (put a breaker bar in the crossmember with a socket on the nut and turn the starter, breaks the bolt loose perfectly) and pulled the harmonic balancer after the engine was timed. with the balancer off the washer comes off and its as easy as sliding the belt on and off (tensioner relieved of course), never touched the cps.
