My credo
God is great, beer is good, and rangers are awesome!
It worked fine before, and then it went out after taking it to the shop. I just got done replacing all the bulbs back there and it still does not work. I would really like it to work. Tia.

first thing that popped into my mind when i read this was.... what did you take it to a shop to get done? and maybe shop slit a wire by accident?

1998 should have a 7.5amp fuse, #11 in cab fuse box

That powers the CEL bulb slot when key is on, also powers other things.
The computer GROUNDS the bulb to turn on the CEL, pin #2 on the computer connector, Pink/light green stripe wire

Check the fuse first, most likely issue

Then on back of the instrument panel there are 3 multi-wire connectors, 214, 215, 216
on 215 look for the Pink/light green stripe wire, pin 9, that's the GROUND wire from computer, it should be a GROUND when you first turn on the key
Right next to it, pin 8, is the wire from the 7.5amp fuse, Red/yellow stripe wire, it should have 12volts when key is on

If both of those test OK then problem will be in the dash circuit board

Wow, I totally expected some really sarcastic answers to this one, and not completely legitimate diagnostics of the CEL and how it works.

I checked the fuse, it's not blown. I guess I'm not gonna worry about it if it's a cut wire somewhere. Thanks for the reply!
