my 2.8 feedback carb is fawkd. it keeps loading up and flooding out, stalling, smoking, and surging. i have a holley 350 that i got off of my buddy. im still missing a few duraspark parts i need, and dont really have the money for them right now. could i just put the carb on and use the stock ignition with it until i get the rest of the stuff to duraspark. could i just set a base timing? would it run decent? any suggestions are welcome

thanks guys

You would be a lot better off to put a kit in the factory carb. With the 350 on there the computer will retard the timing and the vehicle will run like crap.

Mine didn't run too bad with the distributor shooting from the hip.

The feedback system isn't worth putting a dime into if you don't have inspections.

well what if i unhook it from the pcm, and just have a base timing, say 12*, seems like it would still work like a regular disty without an advance feature

I don't think you can unhook it from the PCM unless you rewire it to work without the PCM.

The computer can only control the carb and the distributor, take the carb out of its reach and the distributor won't adjust. Set it where you want it and run.

Do get the right distributor when you can to it though. When I did it a couple years ago, I think it was about $100 for the whole setup counting my JY Duraspark box.

yea im going to get the rest of my duraspark in the next couple of weeks, but i was talking about taking the ecm out all together so it cant alter my timing if i set it at a base timing

You can try unplugging the spout wire that takes the computer out of the loop and try advancing it to like 18 or 20 just to get by. Mine ran pretty good with the duraspark and just unplug the feedback solenoid on the carb, you will run a little rich but you will have the advance on the dizzy and be able to get around pretty good. You will need to control the idle with the normal idle screw on the side of the carb and adjust the idle air needles out for the highest rpm mine were about 3 1/2 to 4 turns out. just make sure the idle air needles are within 1/2 turn between them.

Oh yea was reading a little closer is the choke opening just loosen the three screws and turn it to where the choke is all the way open I had that same problem and the choke thermostat went bad and another time the wire fell off. If the feedback carb is still adjustable you can use it with the duraspark ignition but the other way around will give you nothing but headaches. Too many sensors and controls that the computer gets mixed up and goes wacko. Try disconnecting the battery get the choke to open all the way and turn the idle screws out 3 1/2 turns each put everything back together and make sure all the vacuum lines and wires are in there proper place air filter on and sensor plugged in. Then hook the battery back up and start it and see what it does. Everything has to be connected or the computer will go into limp mode basically no advance and run like crap but just enough to limp home. And if you messed with the timing put it back to 10 degrees with the spout disconnected.

You can take the computer out and it will still run, not well, but it will run. The motor needs to rev. to make the power and without the advance working on the distributor the power will start to drop off at around two thousand rpm., it will also have a tendancy to run hotter than normal. I drove mine a hundred miles to get home like that (due to a trail modification) the hills were a real challenge

Howdy Dealer
You are trying to make the same mistake many others have tried in the past.. Why not listen to others and NOT DO what you are trying to do?
Leave that 350 carb off the engine until you get the lectrics changed at the same time. Your ford simply ain't gonna run any better than it does now...and maybe far worse with that 350 on there.
Either do it RIGHT or don't do it at all.

The distributor won't advance without the computer. And at that, all the sensors on the engine have to be present, plugged in and functioning properly in order for the computer to work. One of two things will happen if you change the carb and not the distributor. 1. It will run worse. 2. It will run ALOT worse. Leave it alone until you get the right distributor.

going to be gettin the rest of what i need for duraspark next week
