For some reason I am now unable to shift down to 3rd. I can shift out of it but I can't shift down to it. 1 and 2 to 3 is fine but 4 or 5-3 and im grinding Does anyone know what may be wrong here or am I retarded? I have tried at various rpms and have been able to find a sweet spot of any sort and I don't want to grind gears trying to figure it out and make it worse.

Oh yeah, it's an 88 2.9L 4x4 5 speed and unfortunately I don't know what tranny I have.

Try this - while rolling along in 4th gear at a speed you would normally be trying to shift from 4th to 3rd - push the clutch in, shift to neutral, let clutch out, blip the throttle to raise the rpms by a thousand or so, and push the clutch back and and try 3rd gear. This is called double clutching, or rev matching a downshift. If this works, your synchros are shot. From your description, it sounds like your synchros are shot anyways. Rebuild the tranny or get another one.

Look to see if you have an inspection cover on the bottom of the transmission. Should be about 10 by 14 with as many bolts. If you do then it is a mistubishi trans. Dump that POS and get a M5OD-R1.

It's amazing how right both of you are. How hard would it be to rebuild or is it going to be easier to just get a new one? Thanks in advance

The mitsubishi trans is a real bitch to rebuild. If you plan on keeping the truck swap in a M5OD-R1. You will not be disappointed.

Too bad you wasn't any closer. I have 2 M5OD-R1's that I am trying to sell. One is rebuilt with roughly 6000 miles on a rebuild and the other worked fine when I pulled it and has never been touched to my knowledge.

mine doesnt like being downshifted from 5th to 4rth. been that way for a while now. i discovered on my own to pause in neutral between the gear change and blip the gas pedal. goes right in. ive done it so much i dont even think about it, kinda became automatic.
