I recently bought a '91 Ranger 4x4 2.9 5 speed FM-146. Locally a guy has a '89 2.9 5 speed which I have not seen yet. Is this the type of trans where you can swap tail housings? The 5 speed I have sounds like a coffee grinder in 2nd & 3rd gears.

Thanks,

Most of the parts will swap between the transmissions. The 4x2 is a FM132 and yours is a FM145 or 146, You cannot simply unbolt the tail shaft housing and swap it over to accomodate the transfercase. The output shaft is longer on the 2 wheel drive transmission. You will need to disassemble both transmissions and swap shafts. These transmissions are very involved and have alot parts that need to be placed correctly in order to actually operate without grenading itself.
