235/85/16 @ 2000ish rpm at 60 mph (measured by gps) with E4OD (.71 od ?) I get I come up with 4.56 gears.
 
The calculator I use comes up with 4.43, so that does translate into something like 4.56 since it doesn't account for drag and such.

any way to visually verify the ring and pinion on a sterling with out tearing it apart?...

like maybe turning the drive shaft and counting how many times the tire spins.
 
Yup, make a mark at 6:00 on the drive shaft and on one of the tires. Spin shaft until the tire makes one full turn. You should have turned the pinion bout 4.5 turns. Get both tires off the ground, makes the math easier.
