I am wanting to get my husband a locker thing for his 2002 Ranger/Edge.
I've been asking questions while helping him do routine maintenance on it,
and found that he has an 8.8" 4:10 L/S, but I would like to get him a
lock rite or powertrax for it....
What I'm asking is what part # would I need???
I've tried looking on there web site but there's like 3 of them listed...

one with a 3/4 - 28 spline
one with a 7/8 - 31 spline
one with a 3/4 - 31 spline

I know that he said the axle code is R7.
How do I check to see what one he has?

All I know is the truck is:
2002
Edge
4X4
Ext. Cab 4 door.
4.0L/auto 5R55E

Thanks,

Merrie

His should be a 28 spline unless somebody has changed it.

Yeah, its 28 spline. The thing is those lockers are for open carrier diffs, your husband's has a limited slip, so your gonna need to change to an open carrier.

really? last time i checked theres zero difference, just pull the LS pack and spiders.

yes he has a 28 spline. the lockright is a very nice unit, that is a drop in setup. no setting up gears or hard work really.

I could have sworn they made a lock right for a L/S?

If that is the case (and after my brief search it seems to be) hold off, buying a carrier and having the R&P switched over may be more than he wants to do.

IMO if you are buying a new carrier, I would get get a carrier locker rather than buying a lock right to boot.

Summit says there is a difference, must be with the dimensions of the cavity inside the carrier.

yes lunchbox lockers (aussie, spartan, lock-rite) all work w/ an open carrier.

although i don't think you can get all 3 brands for a 28 spline axle.

how much are you wanting to spend?
how much work does he want to do? can he do gears? does he really need a locker or could he just overpack the LSD?

MAIN QUESTION FROM ME....
why not get him a front locker? if he has LSD in the rear, a locker up front would be an awesome add!

You are looking for this one

Powertrax for Ford 8.8 28 spline that will work in a limited slip carrier is part number 92-0688-2827

Huh, I always thought they were for open carriers? Did a little research. Could only find the Lock Right for open diffs, but the Powertrax No Slip was offered for the open and limited slip. Both part numbers were the same. Go figure.

92-0688-2807 is a powertrax for an open diff

92-0688-2827 is a powertrac for a limited slip diff.

Right off the powertrax website. 2 different part numbers...

There is a difference, and the l/s carrier locker will NOT fit the open carrier. I had one and ended up selling it to railman cause it didn't fit mine...

Thanks guys!!!!!
I wrote the people at "Rocky Road Outfitters" and this is what they said:

"You cannot install the Lockright kit into a differential which has the Limited slip. Its a fairly different carrier so you do need a kit specifically built for the factory limited slip.

The carrier is what houses the spider gears in the differential and those are replaced with a locker system. An open differential has spider gears, a limited slip has a whole different carrier setup with clutch pads and such. "

So I'm assuming that what he'll need is:
Powertrax No-Slip (Part # 92-0688-2827).

Although I didn't ask what would be needed for the front when I wrote them
I might as well ask here....
From what I've read and what I've asked he has a Dana 35, is that right???
What exactly would the benefits be of installing a lock right up front???

Thanks again,

Depending on how much offroading he/you guys do, A front locker would benefit because this way, youd have All four wheels driving at the same time. Even in 4wd with an open front differential, if one wheel loses traction, that one will spin and the other will stay put.
