Hello,

I have a 1987 Ford ranger swapped with a Ford 302 engine and what I had thought I identified as a Ford C4 transmission. However, when I went to purchase a new transmission filter for the C4 I could not find any that looked the same?

I have attached a picture of my filter.

Is this a C4 transmission fluid filter? If so, can I get some help sourcing a replacement?

Thanks

I suspect you have an FMX. If so the case is cast iron and the aluminum bell housing bolts on. Normally a nasty looking transmission filter like that indicates a major overhaul is in the future but FMX's tolerate debris better than some others so you might get away with it. The torque convertor has a drain plug so you can get most of the fluid out. Once it's refilled, I'd drive it a few hundred miles and change it again. I would also use type F fluid, not one of the miracle, one-size-fits-all fluids you see.
And if you haven't installed it yet, overhaul it first to avoid taking it back out. It's less work to do it right than it is to do it over.

Thanks for the reply, Not sure that is the right one thou. The transmission fluid pans Google shows me don't seem to match mine
Take a pic of the pan and if possible the trans itself
I have attached a picture of the pan and the only picture of the transmission I have on me. There are some numbers inside that I Google 'd that mentioned C4
Thanks

E2 in the casting number means its from 82. I think the C4 died in 81. Im not super familiar with them though.

Wondering if its a C5. They got used behind the 4.2L V8 in some stuff, which was a downsized 302 that ran the same bolt pattern.

I really think its a C5....heres the pan gasket...

But the filter looks different

glad you found it.

Rock auto must have the wrong pic

Weird, my C5 filter did not look anything like that pic Rusty posted. New design or something maybe.

C5s were used in little V8 cars, Granadas, T-birds, etc. Not surprised to see one in a V8 swapped truck. Pretty sure that's what we used to V8 swap my buddy's Maverick in high school.

C5's were used behind 200 sixes, too. I never saw a filter like that in a C5. A C5 can be converted into a C4 to get away from the lock up convertor if you want. The lockup was entirely centrifugal and happened at about 1800 RPMs. Old ladies would start up their new 82 Fairmont, sick it in reverse without kicking the fast idle off the top step and lay rubber, then they'd call up and chew me out. I'd explain how to kick it down before backing out of the garage and they'd tell me they were driving when I was born, so I'd bite my tongue and try to explain it differently.
