This is probably a dumb question... but I don't know much about the seals on this transfer case output shaft...

I have a BW4406 in my 5.0L Ranger. I just removed the drive shaft (slip yoke style) and some transmission fluid leaked out of the rear end of the case where the drive shaft went in.

When I removed the T-case and tilted it up fluid started just pouring out of the tailshaft. I thought the rear end was sealed? Does it rely on the drive shaft to make a seal or do I have a serious problem?
