Can anyone tell me what needs to be done to swap in a bw1354 transfer case into a truck that has a bw1350? I have a 85 ranger that's got a bad transfer case and when I bought it it came with a bw1354 transfer case as a spare and the previous owner said it was pretty much a direct swap but I wanted to make sure before I tore the truck apart. Both transfer cases are manual shift. I tried searching but didn't find much.

You will need the proper front drive shaft for the 1354, unless your truck had the STX high-rider case with the double-cardan u-joint, instead of the slip yoke that goes into the case.

Other than that, it is 100% direct bolt in swap.

I thought the manual shift lever was different?

Yeah, the shifter is different, I don't remember how but I think it's like 90* from the 1350. On the plus side all shifters for the 1354 are the same, but it's only meant to go on the A4LD and M5OD...

But the linkage attachment at the lever on the t-case is the same. Since the 1354 shifter only supposed to work on the A4LD/M5OD the difference is probably a geometery thing caused by the location of the boss on those transmissions. I don't see why you couldn't use the 1350 shifter if you are working with a different trans.

I made this swap because I broke my 1350, broke off the boss that holds the snap ring for the front output bearing, slid into a ditch which flexed the front suspension back pushing the drive shaft into the T-case.. Had to have a custom front drive shaft made, cost over 200 bucks.

carlos, did you have any problems with getting the 1350 shifter to work with the 1354 transfer case?

That's funny cause my FM146 "seems" to have the same mounting bosses and locations as the M5OD I pulled to replace it... Maybe it's just the earlier stuff that was different?

That's possible. The A4LD, M5OD and FM146 are all the same length, give or take a negligible amount. The earlier FM145 and TK and C series transmissions were much shorter.

I have a similar issue with I was given a 1354 instead of a 1350... Would it work if I swapped the front case? Would they match up anybody know? They look pretty damn similar

Swap the front half of the case, instead of getting a different driveshaft

Shifters on the A4LD/M50D/ FM146 will all bolt up . The difference is in the linkage and how the linkage or plate (whatever you want to call it) is bent where it slips into the lever on the TC . Here are the 2 linkages .
