Hey guys, been a lurker here for years. Had a 4bt swapped ranger for 10 years, moved on and now I've got a 90 bronco 2 and i'm starting a 302 swap. So I know everyone loves the explorer 5.0 for swapping into rangers and broncos but heck there getting rare so I picked up a 91 f150 and i'm gonna swap that into it instead. Also money ain't exactly flowing these days(not like when I built the 4bt ranger, that was COSTLY), but it's a v8 not a v6 so that's what matters.
So I am aware that the engine I have is speed density, not concerned about that, but my question, is how much taller is the truck intake vs the car intake. I've got a 3 inch body lift on the bronco already and I have a cowl hood I made years back, just wondering what i'm up against here. It just don't want it to be insane.
Has anyone been successful with the truck intake. I guess that's my big question.
thanks.

Welcome to the swaporama! I don't know how much taller, but it is taller. I think the problem may be at the firewall and maybe not the hood depending on how far back you get the motor mounted. Not sure, but some others on here have more knowledge of that issue.

The 5.0 truck intake is supposed to actually be the best performing one from what I remember... it just doesn't fit in anything but a fullsize.

With a 3" bodylift vertical room isn't exactly in excess in my truck. I don't think I have ever seen anybody use the truck intake on a swap.

Years ago I remember somebody on here comparing the two. Gwaii maybe? I know the truck intake has been done in a Ranger and it seems like it was actually not that that much taller than the car intake - a difference of a couple inches at most although the truck intakes look stupid tall. It sounds like in your case you've got room to spare - I say go for it and keep us updated on your progress...worst case it doesn't work and you're just out some time and minimal cash for a car setup.

ok, thanks guys. I'm gonna give it a try and like you said, car intake if it don't work. From my under standing if I do need a car intake the easiest way is to find a pre 89 car, towncar or mustang and it should be speed density?
It really doesn't look that much taller, Ill do some measuring.
Could someone do me a favor that has a v8 swap and tell me how much clearance the car intake has from the hood and fire wall and how much body lift you have so I can do some estimations?

I have a trickflow intake on now with a 1 inch spacer no body lift. Fit nicely it can rub against the wiper motor enough to rub paint off anyway.

I had the exploder intake with a 3/8 spacer I think it was and the top bolt in the back had to be set in the bolt hole on the upper before the intake was put on.

If you are in Pa I have a 89 crown vic intake and a 87 mercury cougar intake lying around. Hit me up ill give um up cheap to make room.

ramcharger i'm quite a ways from you, i'm in British Columbia Canada, lol. My father in law has a wrecking yard, I know he has a mostly complete 5.0 ho engine, but its go no wiring and we have no idea if it's any good. He also has a towncar that has a 5.0 but i'm pretty sure its a non ho, so basically what you have. Id rather run the truck one if I can. But i'm pretty sure his car is missing the throttle body and most of the wiring so it's gonna be tricky to get all the little bits.
Thanks for the info guys, Ill let you know what I find out!

86-91 Town Car, Grand Marquis, LTD, Mustang... same intakes. The Mustang one is just flipped so that the throttle body is on the passenger side. FYI you can flip it around, they fit either way if you want your throttle body on one side or the other. HO 302s may have larger throttle body diameter. You'll need both the upper and lower... truck upper does not fit car lower and vise versa. I'm about 95% sure that the Mustang and Mark VII are the only cars that got HO engines, the Panther cars did not.

Speed density vs MAF doesn't matter, the intakes are the same and MAF sensor is in the intake tube before the throttle body. The SD MAP sensor is usually on the firewall or fender.

I'll try and remember to grab measurements... I do not have a body lift and am running the car intake in my Ranger. Plenty of hood clearance room. I have an '86 F150 that has the truck style 302 upper - I may be able to measure height from the valve covers or something on both.

If you are going to change intakes go with the Explorer intake--cheaper and flows better than the older Mustang and others. The speed density is not an issue with the intake.
