I built a new 2.9l v6. I replaced damn near everything but at low rpm it spits and sputters and overheats. If you're able to get it over 4k rpm it runs great, doesn't miss runs smooth. I deleted the thermostat, checked water pump flow, checked for blocked passages. Timing is set to 10°, FPR is good, fuel pressure is good, compression is good, No coolant intrusion, no coolant leaks, oil pressure is great.

Side note: when I put the distributor on the first time I had the firing order backwards. Instead of 1-4-2-5-3-6 I had it as 1-6-3-5-2-4, could this have fried my stater or my ICM? Could that be my problem?

Edit: I have replaced the ox sensor and fuel filter, nothing changed, the problem seems to go away when i unplug the ox sensor.
does anyone have a wiring diagram to an 87 and an 88 ranger 2.9 (the harness is out of an 88 mines an 87 and it worked fine with the old motor before it blew up)

It sounds like it could be having an air/fuel mixture issue. Running rich or lean will cause overheating and rough idling.

Have you checked for diagnostic codes?

Running rough and overheating sounds like timing to me, dizzy unhooked when you set the timing?
Id double check timing first.

Make SURE to unplug the SPOUT connector when setting base time.

I doubt having the fireing order backwards hurt anything.

Fuel pressure probably isnt it, that would manifest itself more at high RPM, unless you got a bad FPR or something causing way to much fuel.

Check your wiring plug at the coil too

I'm hoping one of you have had this same issue and figured it out. I'm hoping for a quick fix.

Here's what I have, 2004 2wd Ranger 3.0L. It's blowing a large plume of black smoke with I rev the engine hard. I replaced all 3 O2 sensors, the MAS, evap. purge valve and removed the filter. I changed these parts due to the codes that were popping up. Each time, a different code would pop up. Right now, P2196 and P2198 pops up, which is what popped up to when my Evap purge valve was bad. I rechecked the purge valve, and it's still working.

Any idea what the problem would be? It idles great. I know it's running rich. I can smell it.

On my older '90 Bronco 2 with 2.9 V6, the fuel pressure regulator broke, which caused gas to be dumped straight into the intake manifold resulting in lots of black smoke. I don't know if your engine has a similar setup. It was an easy and inexpensive fix.

That's something I will have to look into. Thank you.

I get code 42 whenever i scan is ( rich bank 1) i have now replaced the o2 sensor and fuel filter and its still doing the exact same thing, i have triple checked timing with and without spout in ( 10 deg out, about 15-20 in) i heard somewhere that if one of the 3 open circuit sensors ( TPS, MAP, ECT) is reading that something is wrong, it will dump fuel to "save" the engine. When the motor hits 3k RPM it runs great, when i let off it backfires but it sounds like a lean backfire and not a rich one.

i have an aftermarket canister coil on the truck its about 4 years old if i had to guess and its pretty hard to mess up 2 wires, i also did set timing with spout out and checked it when i plugged it back in

10 deg without spout about 15-29 with it, seems right to me. with a KOER test it keeps saying it cant communicate with the PCM and that it cant controll RPM

Have you tried swapping out the ECU with a known good one? The 'no communication' code seems to indicate a wiring issue.
