Brakes locked up, cable broken, a couple of questions

Hey all,

My rear left brake froze up today after I applied the parking brake. I took it all apart and found this cable broken inside. I think its called the parking brake cable. Obviously, I have to replace this cable but I have a few questions...

2002 Ranger 4wd 4.0 V6

1. I can't get the drum back on, if I replace this cable will it close the shoes up enough to get the drum back on?
2. The parking brake adjuster spring on the bottom is closed (shortened) as far as it will go and I can't get it to budge trying to adjust it by hand... Do I need to replace this also?
3. Do I need to replace all the other springs on the brakes as well?
4. Should I replace all the stuff on the other side as well?
5. OEM brakes, are they 9" or 10"?

1) No, that cable doesn't help pull the shoes together.

2) Maybe. Pop the adjuster out and try to free it up. I put the star in a vice and use a big screw driver to get them moving again. Then I put anti-seize on the threads. This is probably why the drum won't go back on.

3) That's really up to you. I probably wouldn't bother, but I am really lazy.

4) See 3.

5) That's a 10" brake. The 9" parking brake cable is different. It doesn't have that springy thing on the end.

This is a good time to replace all the hardware on the rear brakes it's quite cheap. unless you do it 3 times to get it right like we did!

Ok, so I got everything all put back together, and it seems that the Parking brake cable is seized up. The passenger side cable seems to work ok, but what happens it I just disconnect the cable going into the driver's side brake? Would it be safe to drive like this? I am currently attempting to unseize the cable.

Those cables are well known for seizing up. Not too much to replace them, and I'd do both sides.
