The light will not come on when the key is turned on. It works properly when the E-bake is depressed. Thanks in advance for any help.

1987 STX extended cab, 2.9, 4x4, auto.

This is perfectly normal and does not indicate a problem. This is how my '88 2.9l works, and my '88 EVTM circuit diagram confirms this behavior is correct.

Seconded. That is normal operation for the 80s dash.

My State inspector insists that it should light up for a "self-Check" just like the seat belt light. I can't see anything in the wiring diagram that would allow the light to do that so I suspect you guys are right. Thanks for your input and keep those Ranger's "Trucking"

It would appear that your state inspector does not understand anything outside of OBDII vehicles, and therefore does not know what he's talking about.
