my 91 ranger 2.3 2wd it sputters backfires loss of power like when im driving it cuts off all power and boggs sputters any gear any rpm it just gets worse i dont have much money to fix it need help to figure this out ive got a 2hr drive home and feels like it wants to die has new plug wires on it only 4 cant get the other 4 on it was doing this just as bad with the old wires and got more power out of the 4 thats on it now. truck starts on first turn so i dont think its the fuel pressure regulator has new fuel filter. only thing thats not new are the spark plugs and i honestly dont think it could be them if the truck fires up on the first turn and if i cant get the last 4 wires on idk how id replace the other 4 spark plugs. forgot to mention you can smell alot of gas when if boggs and sputters like its flooding

I think I would check the fuel pressure regulator. I think you have a regulator mounted on the fuel rail that feeds the injectors. It would be a round canister with a vacuum line plugged into it. If you pull the vacuum line and can smell fuel, the internal diaphragm is likely ruptured, allowing fuel a direct flow to the intake. If it does not smell of fuel, check the pressure with the engine running at idle, with and without the vacuum line attached. The pressure should 'bump' when the line is disconnected, and fall back when re-connected. Pressure should be in the mid 30's. You may be able to 'borrow' a gauge from an auto parts store that you buy if you break.

My 91' 2.3 is doing that too. I get a code that says it's the MAF sensor. My truck runs great and then it will bog down. Fuel smell and red hot cat converter.
