I have a 98 ranger, last spring the resistor pack went causing me to only have high speed, changed the resistor everything worked fine. Then a couple months later the resistor blew again, changed it under warranty.

Just the other day I lost speeds again.. My question is what else should I be checking that would cause the resistor pack to keep blowing?

Would it be the fan motor itself?

Thanks

If the motor is tight (hard to turn, usually caused by dried out bearings) it can take out the resister. A poor or burnt connector for the resister can also cause premature failure.

Poor connections or failing blower motor would kill it.

On the older blower systems the switching is done with the ground to the motor. Maybe you have an issue with the switch or a chassis ground. Sand all the grounds metal to metal especially the ground to the blower switch and inspect the switch, wires and connector for overheating.

Pull the blower motor and look to see if the plenum is full of leaves or other debris. Anything that causes the motor to turn more slowly than it would when spinning freely will increase the current draw of the motor circuit. If there are a lot of leaves/debris, check/lubricate the motor bushings.

How well is it moving air + 1 on pulling the motor if you can get a air nozzle in there and blow the heater core and vacuum it out good. Check the doors are working properly. My jeep had a burnt connector at the switch and I kept burning resistors on it also. If it sounds good on high speed it is not likely the motor but run it for a while and see, if the blower motor is getting to hot to hold your hand on it needs to be replaced.

Definitely the blower motor starting to go. This is what I found when I started to smell burning leaves.

The pic turned sideways for some reason after upload??
