bizarre incident

my 2005 2wd has a 16" spare, but not quite tall enough for 4wd use.

Crown Vics around 1998-2000 also have 16" spares, they are in the trunk and hopefully cleaner.

That would mean the tires sidewall is 4mm tall? Gotta be a harsh ride... :icon_rofl:

Joking aside, I've found with aluminum rims even if you get the correct size and spacing, if the caliper is tight sometimes they still don't fit. They can be stepped more to clear the caliper where other rims are not.

Correction: The sidewall is 41mm tall. Even still, it's a really low profile tire, and probably a rough ride. For the record, 41mm is 1 and 5/8 inches.

Interesting fact: the sidewalls on my Taurus are 5 1/4 inches, approx.

I have also had a caliper bolt back out. Fortunately for me, it happened in snowy parking lot, and no damage was done jockeying it into spot.

I also ensure I torque the bolts in - these are brakes after all. But it was a cold, freezing rain day that I had replaced the pads and I had skipped the Loctite step.
As part of the repairs, all 4 bolts (did other side as well) got Loctite Red - I have big enough wrenches to overcome the Loctite when pads next need changing and I want the security that there won't be a next time.

I saw it happen, still don’t quite understand why it happened because I’ve done brakes numerous times on my trucks and friend’s vehicles over the years with never a problem, but I guess there’s always that one time. Even sheared a caliper bolt trying to tighten it to spec back when I first started with it all.
