BII - Explorer Fuel Tanks

Just wondering if the tanks are the same between 89-90 BII - 91-94 Explorer and more importantly fuel pump. Reason is my '89 BII needs a fuel pump but I have a chance to get a '94 Explorer with a bad trans but good 4.0 and everything else and wondering if that pump would work in my BII tank. thanks all

The fuel tank in the X is mounted inside the frame rail and is nearly identical to your 97 Ranger tank. The fuel pump will fit in the hole of the 89, but, it is about an inch shorter and is a high pressure pump, I don't know what that will do to your frame rail mounted pump, you can change the pump from the sending unit of the X to the sending unit of the B2 and eliminate the frame rail pump. The other problem with just changing the units, is the lines don't point in the right direction, you could extend the fuel lines to make them reach. I think the wiring plug is also different, (the one on a 92 X is) but the wires can be spliced if you so desire.
If you will go to my PB page there are some pictures of what you are asking about and also the method I used to keep from having to drop the tank to work with the sending unit/pump.

The '89 Bronco2 also has a high pressure pump.

But it's a very different pump assembly which is frankly more similar to the pump assembly used in a 1991-up Full Size Bronco or F-series.

the 1989-90 Bronco2 pump is a "Cannister type pump"
the pump is enclosed in a plastic "can" which contains a shuttle valve and a return fuel powered venturi.

It's actually a fairly sophisticated system.

The explorer pump assembly is functionally identical to any '89-97 Ranger pump assembly

The tank is similar in basic layout but the explorer tank will not fir in a Ranger.

the explorer frame is WIDER behind the transmission crossmember.
this allows more room for the fuel tank , but was primarily done to
place the springs DIRECTLY under the frame rails.

the Explorer tank is a "Back fill" the L O N G filler hose goes to a filler behind the axle and passes over the axle to enter th back of the tank....

They really aren't the same as a ranger tank at all...

Allen, I wasn't trying to say the tanks were the same, or were interchangeable, sorry for the misunderstanding, I were referring to size and shape as he has a 97 Ranger and could have a look at that before getting the X. About the only things the Ranger and X tanks have in common are the material they are made of, but at a glance they look similar, width and length, I don't know about height, and haven't checked capacity.
Thank you for the info about the pump on the 89 B2, I did not realize it was of the high pressure variety. Except for the expense of the new pump, that would be a drop in replacement that will eliminate the rail mounted pump. I also see they are rated at 100-110 psi, rather than the 80-100 psi of the X pump.

I'm just clarifying.

The PSI of the pump doesn't really matter all that much,
the FPR cuts that down to 35-ish in operation.
