Bench Bleeding slave cyl - Supposed to be solid?

I'm in the process of bench bleeding my master cylinder and slave cylinder. How do I know that the slave has been properly bench bled? Should I be able to move it by hand when it is NOT connected to the quick disconnect line? (Not connected to anything?) Currently I can compress the cylinder by hand. I'm thinking I shouldn't be able to compress it if it's filled with fluid.


The master is bled...can't move it when it is NOT connected to the slave.

You don't need to bench bleed the slave, just throw it in and bleed it while it's in the truck. If you bench bled your master then you've taken care of 90% of the process.

To answer your question, you'd need 4 hands.

2 to compress the slave against the spring to its normal (clutch pedal out) released position.

2 to press the master while you watch those other two hands not be able to hold the slave compressed any more.

If you hang the master so that the "installed position" top is bottom, and hang the slave midway between the reservoir and the master, then open the slave bleeder a few times, it'll gravity bleed. When no air comes out, you're done.

Remember, the key is to have the reservoir highest, then slave, and master lowest and re-oriented. I had great success with two 93 2.3's in a row. Bled as just described, then disconnected slave QD. Installed everything and reconnected slave line. Didn't have to bleed either one of them after installation in the truck. Just like Ford intended (why else would they use a quick disconnect?).

But no, if the Master is alone, you should NOT be able to compress it unless you put a screwdriver to the QD end while compressing. No reason to do that if you gravity bleed it.
