My 87 is running rich all the time. I have checked the FPR and no fuel dribbles out. I may have to take it somewhere and have the problem diagnosed so I don't throw more parts at it. Can the FPR be bad and not leak fuel? Does the MAP work when the truck is cold?
I have little money and can't afford to put anymore parts on this thing not knowing if that is the problem. I pulled the codes as seen in my earlier post: 14,32,42. If the EGR is bad will it hurt anything? I replaced the TFI and that didn't help. Would the pickup in the dist. cause it to run rich? I have a new 02 sensor but I dont want to put it in if its still gonna run rich,I cant afford another $40! I checked the vacume line to the FPR and its fine,if I pull it off with it running it runs even worse. Thanks. I like this truck but its no good at all if I cant drive it and I can't even sell it the way its running now.

Did you check the fuel pressure at the rail? Maybe an injector is leaking.

Have you tried checking the wire that is discussed in the thread titled "HELP 2.9 Running rich ?????????????"
Seems like an easy thing to check and fix.

I don't have a fuel pressure gauge and I don't know anyone that does. I'll look for the orange wire tomorrow. That'd be really cool if it were something as simple as that. Where does it go? Is it hooked to the engine for ground? The wires have been messed with before for some reason cause they were hanging down and the O2 sensor wire was almost on the exhaust pipe.

if you don't have a fuel pressure gauge, send it to the shop.

check the vacuum line going to your map sensor, if it has leaks it will fool the computer into thinking you have your foot on the pedal.

the proper way to test a fuel pressure regulator is with a pressure gauge, and a vacuum pump.

I checked the orange wire and its fine. I just checked the ohms on the IDM resistor and it reads 15K ohms.

if you have properly checked the FPR then check the 2 wire coolant temp sensor or just replace it

I'm gonna try to replace the IDM resistor today,I know it is bad cause I was able to check it and also put the new rotor in. The first one I got from Orielly's was defective and I had to put the old one in. If this doesn't help then it's off to the shop that works on my moms 99 Sable. They can check the FPR and everything else.

If you are getting EGR codes positively verify the integrity of the "christmas lines"

the red and green vacuum line toat run between the vacuum source on the TB the control solenoid on the inner fender and the EGR valve.

If there is a vacuum leak ANYWHERE in that @$%$#$ EGR system
all hell breaks loose...

another method for fixing it is simply swap in an '88 computer
which doesn't even look for the EGR system therefore it the
system is A-F-U you'll NEVER know about it.

Will the EGR mess up the way the engine runs? Like running rich all the time? I took it to the shop yesterday to have it diagnosed. I am supposed to get it back Monday.

would the computer out of an 88 work in a 87 ranger with the 2.9L ?

yep, as long as its out of a 2.9 federal emissions truck 88-92 it will run fine. I went as far as getting the EGR blockoff plate off of a later truck and removing the entire EGR system when I did that.

I just brought the Ranger back from the shop to get it diagnosed. They couldn't find anything wrong. Now it doesn't show any codes and nothing showed up on the machine. The FPR is ok,as far as he could tell everything was working right. Why do I still smell gas in the exhaust? Its not real bad but I still smell it. After about a 20 minute drive it will idle down and start bouncing around. I think I may have killed the O2 sensor I had put in before the first set of plugs fouled. If the MAP is bad will it show on the diagnostic machine? He said he unplugged it while it was running and it died. About two weeks ago I did put Lucas fuel injector cleaner in it and it has that same gas and it is running better than it was,not as rich. I already got a new O2 sensor so I might put that in tomorrow and set the timing and be done with it. I checked out the vacume line to the MAP sensor and it is good. Thanks for any advice you might have.
