are ranger and explorer tranny the same

I have the chance to buy an v8 4x4 explorer cheap with no tranny, so will the tranny out of my 94 ranger work in a 97 explorer, if so is it plug and play. Or would I be better off getting one from a junk yard.

It will if the exploder is a 4.0l and your ranger is too, but it wont work if its a 4.0 tranny trying to go on a v8, that would definatly make a a4ld explode.

Even if it's a manual it won't work. Bell Bolt pattern is different.

That is not what I wanted to hear but I am better to hear that now then get stuck with something I can't use. So would a tranny from any 5.0 work, I really like the idea of having more room in the back and the tools out of the elements. Also do all explorers come with the gt40 type heads and intake that that might be worth buying. Also I am guessing most of the drivetrain would swap into my truck other then the engine,tranny,tranfer case,and electronics or am I wrong here to.

There is a generational gap between your truck and that explorer. Because of the OBDII system you'd need a 96+ trans if you go auto. If you go manual any 5.0 trans should do.

I'm not sure about the t-case, rear axle would go in the ranger with some work, I think the 97 Ex is IFS, so the front axle is no dice. Due to differing engines a lot of the electronics would not be compatible, only because most of the electronics are specific to the engine. Radio and such might work.

Also, when you say "drive train, other than engine, tranny, t-case" what's left in the drive train except the axle?
