Was looking up torque values for flexplate to crank bolts for the 4.0 SOHC and am getting mixed results from multiple sources.
Some sources say they are TTY and some say they are reusable.

96 - 00 Explorer Workshop manual says
Stage 1: Tighten to 13 Nm (10 lb-ft).
Stage 2: Tighten to 71 Nm (52 lb-ft).

2009 FSM says TTY
Stage 1: Tighten to 13 Nm (115 lb-in).
Stage 2: Tighten to 50 Nm (37 lb-ft).
Stage 3: Tighten an additional 90 degrees.

Haynes:
Thru 1999: Step 1: 19 to 25 ft-lbs, Step 2: plus 90 deg
...2000: Step 1: 10 ft-lbs, Step 2: 52 ft-lbs

Did they switch to TTY in a specific year?
Can anyone confirm if bolts for 2001 are reusable?

Ford dealership doesn't know...

The 4.0l OHV engine used from 1990-2000 in Rangers didn't use a TTY bolt, but could if you wanted

The 4.0l SOHC engine used in Rangers from 2001-2011 did use a TTY bolt

TTY was developed because its cheaper to use in automated engine assembly plants
Torque wrenches need to be calibrated/tested often when torque will exceed 50ft/lb or you get broken bolts or untight bolts
90deg rotation doesn't need to be calibrate, well not really, lol, as far as automation is concerned

In the case of the 4.0l SOHC crank bolt you should be fine reusing it a few times, but use the 50ft/lb not the 90deg, as the final sequence

That's good news
New bolts are around $80 and 10 days out

Thanks for the quick reply :)

That is one sky high price

Part number is E7RY-6A340-B
Runs about $15, at Ford Dealers, lol

Not sure if E7RY-6A340-B are the right ones. These look to be standard hex heads and might be for the OHV.
Originals are E12 Torx

(Looked it up and E7RY-6A340-B looks to be the harmonic balancer bolt)

Yes, its the crank pulley bolt

Sorry miss read your question

Flywheel or flexplate bolts are F77Z-6379-AC

Should be 8 about $5 each

Yes you could reuse them a few times

My 4.0 SOHC powered Ranger has over 279K miles on it with many times of flywheel removal. I have never replaced the original flywheel bolts. I follow the torque instructions in the Ford Service Manual and use Loctite. That may not be the correct way to do it, but it has worked well for me.

Thanks for the info.
Going 52 ft/lbs & Locktite. Wish me luck!
