OK guys here is what I have. 2003 Ford Ranger Edge, 5 speed 3.0L. I am getting a flashing CEL and the following codes. P0300, P0301, P0304, P0305, & P0316. I know what the codes mean. My problem is diagnosing what is wrong. Here is what has been done so far. Plugs and wires are a year old. Compression check done after new heads installed and are as follows:

#1 165
#2 170
#3 175
#4 165
#5 175
#6 175

I did not do a wet compression test because of the new heads and the above compression numbers are good. They are within 6% from highest to lowest and well within tolorences.

I've replace the crank position sensor and the cam postion sensor. I checked for vacuum leaks by spraying starter fluid all over the place and nothing happened. I do NOT have an EGR valve so I cannot check it for leaks. I got a new coil pack and installed it with no changes so I returned it. I check the fuel pressure at the rail and it reads 65lbs. I checked the ohm resistance in all the fuel injectors and they were well within specs. I even had a friend check the injector plugs with a noid tester and they blinked as well.

When it idles, I can hear what seems like a little backfire "clicking" noise. If I unplug the spark plug wire in cylinder 4, the engine literally does not change at all. The backfire "clicking" noise is gone. I can also hear the noise in the exhaust but sounds like a "poof" at the tail pipe.

I did NOT replace the O2 sensors being as they are $80.00 a pop for one and I have 3 and I find it really hard to believe it is the cat.

I am running out of options. My first thought was a worn cam. My g/f had the oil changed religiously though. My other though might have been jumping a tooth in the timing chain.

I am hoping some Ford mechaninc reads this and tells me it is something simple.

With that many misfire codes, I would think it might be the coil pack. The flashing CEL means the misfire is bad enough to cause damage to the CATS. I replaced the coil for the same issue and the problem was solved.

I tired a new coil pack as I stated and nothing changed. I even did a resistance check on the new coil pack and the old with the results being the same on the primaries and secondaries. You actually had all the codes I had?

No, not all those codes but did have multiple misfire codes and a blinking CEL. Also just replaced both heads.

New heads, on an 2003? Did these codes appear just after installing new heads?

Yes and no. The codes appeared before along with a few more and now after with less. The engine has 208K miles on it.

misfire

Switch plugs on two and four , start truck and pull num 4 see if you have misfire then, if so then check rocker arms , maybe valve sticking , loose rocker, seat in head ground out to much ? Start simple and dont over think it. There is of course always hand grenades:yahoo:

Did you double and triple check to make sure your plug wires are hooked up in the right order? I have seen that happen to many times to too many people to not suggest it now.

Ok, here is what I did. I got two new heads, installed them with new bolts gaskets, etc. Trunk ran good for a while. Now I am pulling the same codes again. Did a compression test and my highest reading was 195 and lowest 175, about a 10% difference. What is weird is the lowest, 175 PSI happens to be on the cylinder I get the P0304 with pending
P0305 and P0306 and of course the dreaded P0300. I am about to say screw this and take it to the ford dealer and pay $105.00 for a complete diagnostic. Any ideas?
