OK guys here is what I have. 2003 Ford Ranger Edge, 5 speed 3.0L. I am getting a flashing CEL and the following codes. P0300, P0301, P0304, P0305, & P0316. I know what the codes mean. My problem is diagnosing what is wrong. Here is what has been done so far. Plugs and wires are a year old. Compression check done after new heads installed and are as follows:
#1 165
#2 170
#3 175
#4 165
#5 175
#6 175
I did not do a wet compression test because of the new heads and the above compression numbers are good. They are within 6% from highest to lowest and well within tolorences.
I've replace the crank position sensor and the cam postion sensor. I checked for vacuum leaks by spraying starter fluid all over the place and nothing happened. I do NOT have an EGR valve so I cannot check it for leaks. I got a new coil pack and installed it with no changes so I returned it. I check the fuel pressure at the rail and it reads 65lbs. I checked the ohm resistance in all the fuel injectors and they were well within specs. I even had a friend check the injector plugs with a noid tester and they blinked as well.
When it idles, I can hear what seems like a little backfire "clicking" noise. If I unplug the spark plug wire in cylinder 4, the engine literally does not change at all. The backfire "clicking" noise is gone. I can also hear the noise in the exhaust but sounds like a "poof" at the tail pipe.
I did NOT replace the O2 sensors being as they are $80.00 a pop for one and I have 3 and I find it really hard to believe it is the cat.
I am running out of options. My first thought was a worn cam. My g/f had the oil changed religiously though. My other though might have been jumping a tooth in the timing chain.
I am hoping some Ford mechaninc reads this and tells me it is something simple.
