I've seen these posts online where people have painted their vehicle with Rustoleum and a foam roller. I was just curious if anyone here has ever done it??

Well, I once saw a Pinto painted with lime green house paint using a short nap roller. It was so unbelievably ugly, it was cute.

The Rust Oleum jobs apparently turn out pretty decent.

Roll it on, wet sand, roll more, Polish.

It has to be thinned.

I want to try it. I've used automotive paint and a gun, it would be interesting to try something like this.

Never tried a roller but I have rattle can painted my frame with rust paint and the rocker panels were usually treated with rubber gaurd.

I had seen the "orange peel" effect produced by rolled on paint and it looked OK...not sure if that was a foam roller or not...

I did roll on rust paint with a foam brush (not Rustoleum particularly) several dozen TV tower sections that turned out really good and according to my customers is holding up fantastically...and they were pretty shabby looking beforehand but were impressively salable once painted.

I never did roll on paint or Rust Oleum...

My F-150 got a rattle can job of tractor paint last fall. I didn't have time to finish body work, had to protect it and was also tired of my truck looking ugly. I did a 30/30 job.... $30 and it looks great from 30' away. I just did a quick mask job and spray bombed it, wasn't worried about runs or thickness of paint, a lot of it will be stripped or sanded in the process of finishing the body work. If you took your time, you could probably do a really awesome job with tractor paint. It finishes with a nice smooth gloss, even from a rattle can

I'm sure I've seen an article in one of the online hot rod magazines that shows the process they used to paint with rustoleum.

I've actually seen a truck done that way, but he used a sprayer and thinned it. He also wouldn't admit to it in public (too many questions I assume).
It does a reasonable job, isn't as glossy as proper catalysis paint. Think old equipment trailer.

It is also a lot work and no cost is saved over a better product.

Prep is the main thing (as with any paint job). If you skimp on the prep, the end result will look like crap. I havent used a roller but I did rattle can the back door of my white Samurai (it was a red door). roughed up the surface, cleaned well, then p[ainted it. Its didnt come out a shiney as the rest of the Samurai, but it matches close enough...

I did clear coat it after. It passes, but its not perfect...

painting with a roller

i have used camo green and gray paint from cabelas [ oil base ] like mentioned before prep is time well spent, paint seems to stick better without the body tape and some wet sanding with 220 paper,,,,, even by hand the ranger body isn't that big, do a panel at a time, it will go fast,,,,,,, at 55 i have no orange peel

Yes. I painted my '86 using rustoleum. I sanded the whole rig then did one panel at a time. Roll on the paint in the a.m, sand that night. I took about 2 weeks to do it and cost around 100 bux in supplies. Once you develope your relationship with the 4" roller you are golden. C'mon, good looking paint for around $100, that wears like iron? No brainer. And I'm happy to show it off.

This dude did it first, 9th post down

Trying to recover from a hard drive crash, the nerds have the laptop now, I hope I can get the pics and documents back. The BII is under 4 ft of snow right now, if we ever get sane weather back I'll get some new snaps.
