Anyone else here this?

You know while were talking about new and old isn't it funny that the new mustang V6 and the 65-66 Shelby are just a couple horsepower apart depending on the number your reading.

I just saw it in the paper the other day that automatics are gettting better gas mileage than manuals.

I don't think they will do that... but it does seem like they are trying to phase them out. Notice now how anything equipped with a manual now days has a few miles per gallon less on the rating then the automatics? It used to be the other way round, although I think its mostly cause people can't drive manuals properly to get better MPG's. Same thing with towing, Autos have more towing capacity then a manual now... mostly due to people not being able to properly use a manual for towing...

I think I am going to buy an automatic car for city driving but I loe having my stick shift truck...

They are phasing themselves out because the majority of the buying public doesn't want them. Automatics can quite often go for several hundred thousand miles without a problem, a clutch won't. Clutch jobs are not cheap to pay someone to do, and they can be a PITA to drive at times, so what is so surprising that people are moving away from them?

They probably get better milage because with all the variable cam and intake stuff it is more effecient when the computer can control the tranny too, rather than trying to guess the driver's shift points.

Manuals are fun for a toy (with a fun engine in front of them is better yet) I used to have one for a dd... I haven't looked back after going back to an automatic. I wouldn't mind getting one for when I get in the mood to blast thru the gears though, that is fun to do once in awhile.

I agree, autos are getting better mileage these days because the computer can control the shift and hit it at the optimum point. Autos aren't inherently less efficient than a manual, the loss of fuel economy was caused by a lack of physical connection. Lock-up converters pretty much fix that.

But most of what was said here is pretty correct. They are phasing themselves out just because so few people want them anymore. Honestly, with so few cars even available with manuals anymore it's something of a misnomer to call a manual a "standard" transmission anymore, seeing as how the auto comes standard in many cars these days.

It's kind of like "stock car" racing. 50 years ago you could go down to your local Ford, GM, or Chrysler dealership and, if you had enough money, actually buy a car with all the same specs as the car running on the track at Daytona. Someone want to show me where I can get a street-legal Fusion with factory equipped V-8, carb, 4-speed manual, and RWD with 9" rear end?

I have had both Auto and Manuals for a DD and still will take a Stick over an auto any day. Whats cheeper a clutch or a tranny? It hasnt costed me any more than 100 bucks to change a clutch but has costed me thousands for an auto tranny rebuilt or new. And my sticks have always proven to be more reliable then my autos.

Well no I'm not surprised they are phasing them out but I do think they will keep them around in more then just the mustang.

I agree that autos have gotten ALOT better, I love driving the automatics and not worrying about shifting in the city, but my manual is still fun a hell! I want to get a Fusion or Tarus with the Automatic for trips and city driving but I am going to stick with the manual in my ranger. It is the most perfect place for a stick in my opinion, the car is almost no fun for me to drive a stick and an auto makes it a perfect cruiser and a Huge truck is for towing and heavy loads so an automatic makes the shifting smoother, but the ranger is a car sized truck which is sportier then a big truck and bigger and more rugged then a car...
