My truck is getting old I am pretty sure in the next 6 months I'll need a transmission anyway.

Anyone have some prices on an extended drivetrain or any other warranty from Ford OR from a third party company?

I had a buddy who did this on his explorer, and they paid for his tranny after 3 months and 200 miles of driving... I can't recall the name of it though.

Just need a guestimate, weighing my options here.

2003 Ford Ranger Tremor 2wd, 140k miles, 3.0, 5r55e trans.

An 03 with 140k....all you are going to get is a 3rd party warranty....which personally I don't think are worth the powder to blow them to hell.

It may not worth the cost. If you buy a used vehicle with under 100,00 miles I see companies that will give you a warranty. After that you just won't find anything..unless the company is crooked. I know two people who bought a warranty with aprox 90,000 miles on their trucks. One guy was able to make a claim at 110,00 miles and the other guy made a claim at 98,000. It was covered. Some places only cover vehicles that are 9-10 years old with less then 100,00. So you need to shop around. Just do a search on the company in your area and see how honest they are (BBB).

I see ads for companies that say they'll cover any car no matter the miles, but I bet they're expensive. I'd rather just pay for the repairs when they're needed than mess with another insurance type company.

How much money do you really think an HONEST company would make covering auto repairs on old and unmaintained vehicles? Do some research on these companies with the BBB. I think you'll find the companies are nothing but a high pressure sales pitch with little benefit once your payment is made. IMO a better insurance policy would be to make friends with a good mechanic.

Just my $.02

I bought an extended warrenty with the blazer through Qcertified. It added 3000 dollars to the price but its covered till the clock reads 168,xxx on all lubricated parts, axles, and saftey systems.... They just paid for the wheel bearing/ hub assembalies to be replaced. They are going to cover my faulty abs module but not the tfi module for the 4wd. I pay 100 dollar deductible when I use it....... You'd be suprised how much more I beat on the car now that I know its covered.

But I got my warrenty through the stealership that sold me the car......... The one that cleared the codes and pencil whipped the 140 point inspection they claim they did.

Ford extended warranty is limited to 7 years or 100,000 miles from the original in-service date/mileage. You passed that a while ago.

If your trans blows up, suck it up and trade the truck or buy a Ford remaned trans and have the dealer install it. Then you get your transmission warranty reset. You'll get another 3 years or 36,000 mile warranty on it. But you have to buy the Ford unit and have the dealer install it or you are at the mercy of the transmission reman company that builds whatever you get. Most of their warranties aren't as good and they will argue that the dealer screwed up.

Japser is pretty good about warranty though.

Generally.............when you "buy" an Extended Warranty....all you're really doing is paying in advance for the future repairs.

If the extended warranty cost more than $1,000....you'd be better off doing like the guys said---take care of your vehicle & suck it up when something expensive falls apart.

As for honest E.W. companies.............your transmission is going out........and you need a cheap, honest E.W. company.............

anyhow.....some car insurance companies like GEICO offer E.W.s to their existing customers....other than that.....i got nothing.....

Ford techs say there is nothing wrong with the transmission. I have driven it 10 times since they diagnosed it, the light has not returned. It is very curious. They said it is a fluke, and perhaps the car wash DID get a sensor or something wet by chance. It still shows no symptoms.

Probably best to just throw in a junkyard transmission for 500 bucks when it goes out, it IS a 2wd. Done that route before and had good luck with it. I really only need 2 years max out of this truck. If it can make it another 20-30k I'm good.

I've had Fords with 2-3x that mileage (4.0 explorer, 250, had a 1992 3.0 with 465k, f150 w/ 260) Hopefully she'll last until I can buy my F150 platinum.

thanks guys

I had a Skoda (really) with a third party warranty...they went bankrupt...but my Ford extended warranty on my Tempo was great...I'd buy one just for that little peace of mind...not even sure if we have any EW companies in Canada any more...

I bought the ESP when we got the Escape for a few reasons, but the biggest one was that I got it at cost. That and I don't really ever want to pay for a repair on that vehicle, except for the regular stuff, brakes, fluids, etc.

Read the fine print. What I found is that the extended warranty starts the same day you buy the car. exa: You purchase a car in 2001 with a 6 year extended warranty. you would think you have 9 years of warranty on the car (manufactuer 3 + 6 years extended). But noooo the extended parallels the manufacturer warranty. So rather than having a warranty until 2010 you only have a warranty until 2007.

That's how most warranties are. They are listed by their total length. You have a base, and an extended. A "6-year" as in your example is 6 years from the in-service date.
