Any known issues with swapping a '98 4.0 to an 89 BR2?

Hi Guys,

Just picked up a 89 Bronco II 4x4 5 speed. It has a blown head Gasket which I was thinking about replacing, but pulling the heads is easier with the engine out, and if I going that far, I figure I might as well swap in a 4.0.

There is a guy selling a 98 Ranger with the 4.0. He took the transmission (Automatic) and is scrapping the rest. Says the engine ran good before he took the tranny. $350.00 Figure I may also be able to use the front axle so the price is right.

It seems most of the info here involves pre-1996 4.0's. I've skimmed most of the articles and haven't seen anything. So just wondering if there is any reason why a 98 wouldn't work.

Thanks in Advance!

'98 will work fine, provided you swap the necessary wiring and engine bay componennts along with the engine. '98 will be an OBDII 4.0 with PATS, which means more wiring changes. You will also want a 4.0 computer for a 5 speed.

If you were to swap the entire engine bay harnesses and dash, then you would have very little splicing to do; fuel pump, tail lights, etc. Putting a '98 Dash into an '89 isn't quite a bolt in swap, like a '94 and earlier would be.

If you were to find a '94 or earlier 4.0 wiring harness and computer it would make using the '98 engine a little less work.

Front axle is worthless to you, the rear would be a little bit of an improvement if the gearing is right. It won't be a drop in deal in a BII IIRC, you will need to change the mounts some for a BII.

The computer location is completely different and the factory harness will not reach to the broncos location without extending the harness or relocating the computer... I am putting a 99 ranger 4.0 with anti theift in my 86 bronco and trust me you are going to want every bit of harness from under the dash and under the hood

Just put a 96 4.0 in my 86 b2. Let me know if u want pics of wiring and all that good info. One of the Best swaps I’ve done.

I have a 98 4.0 in storage. The transmission that came with it is already in my 94 super cab,

hopefully when I sell my other truck I'll be putting 98 4.0 engine in the 94.

I'll be tuned in if you do it!
