Another (probably stupid) Shift plug ?

Hi. My name is Jesse. I'm new to TRS. I recently bought a 1996 Ranger XLT 2.3L 2wd. I want to slowly convert my truck over to an all-Royal Purple fluid vehicle lol. I want to take care of the shift rail plugs while I'm under the truck. The question I have is about the venting problem when you switch to the expasion plugs. Do you have to tap a hole and add a hose barb fitting and vent that to something? Is there any easier way to fix this venting issue?

As the resident manual trans "guru"....

On the trans I'm currently building up for ME I'm going to be using threaded plugs
and the center one will have a bose barb... actually a "banjo" fitting that'll be hooked to a length of line running to a "fuel filter" (these prevent bugs from getting in) that'll be mounted in the engine compartment.

It'll run parallel to the identical line I'll be running from my T-case

(I've managed to FILL my T-case with water once already because of the short vent the factory provided)

The only thing that scares me about going that route is getting shavings in the tranny when tapping threads in the holes. Any easy way to block them or a way to make sure they get flushed out? Actually I'm thinking I could weld a hose barb into the expansion plug. That might be the easiest way. But thanx for the help!!! If I can't get my idea to work I'll probably be going your route.

If the trans is already in the truck then why not just use steel plugs on the shift rail plugs and then drill/tap your fill plug for a vent? Even if you're going to use the fill plug then it's just a matter of pulling the hose to get in there and most people just pull their shifter and fill through the top anyway.

Ahhh... the beauty of working on the top cover while it's off the trans...

Then again, I'm also adding a temp sensor in the
side of the transmission so I can monitor trans oil temp.
